Actual TextCongress shall make no law respecting an estab- lishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exer- cise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peace- ably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

MeaningThe 1st amendment is the freedom of religion, press, freedom of speech, and to petition. The government can only engage in assemblies if they are illegal. You are free to speak unless it is slander, libel, or endangers public. You have the right to petition against government.
